Love: An Inevitable Feeling

One can hardly imagine life without love. An unknown author once said, “Everyone needs somebody to love, and someone to love them back.” We are humans; therefore, we must acquire love to survive. Love is considered the food of our life; thus, without it, life has barely any meaning. Somewhere it is conditional, where it asks for something in return, while somewhere it is conditional.

Love can be broken up into two forms: conditional and unconditional. Conditional love is basically nothing less than looking after one’s self- interest wherein it causes a certain amount of expectation from the other person. Satisfying each other’s needs is the basis of such a love. Nevertheless, if this “need” does not get satisfied, love turns into emptiness and frustration. On the other hand, unconditional love means caring genuinely about someone else’s happiness even if it means sacrificing everything in the world. In contrary to conditional love, there would be no expectations because once a person receives rejection from the opposite person, feelings of emptiness and frustration does not arise. It is indeed the purest form of love, which is the need of our life.

There are many kinds of love that a person can give to another individual. First is the love for social relationship. Doubtlessly, no man is an island. Cliché as it can be, every individual needs a friend to lean on and talk to when things aren’t going their way. No matter what the relationship with our parents is like, we cannot always tell them everything. That is one of the many reasons why having friends you can trust and count on is so vital. It is not as intimate as the other kinds of love for it only shows care and does not involve any commitment. However, this kind of love can sometimes lead to a romantic relationship, which is the love for opposite sex. It is the feeling you get when you meet the “right” person, but it can spontaneously degenerate when the magic isn’t there anymore. You fall I love, yet you can fall out of it as well. Aside from these kinds of love towards a “stranger,” the love for family cam be considered as an individual’s first love because they are the one’s who were there since the beginning of one’s existence; they are also the ones who taught an individual everything about love.  Family is the most trusted group of individual one could ever have. Their love is unconditional, no matter what. Families stick by each other through thick and thin and will always be there for you. Another kind of love is love for oneself. Everyone has probably heard that in order to be able to truly love another person, a person needs first to love oneself. Self-love is at the very core of wellbeing, joy, self-empowerment, and your ability to create and enjoy the kind of life you want. As for the lyrics of Whitney Houston’s phenomenal song “Greatest Love of all”, “Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all”.  Above all these kinds of love, is love for God. There would be no love at all if it were not for God’s love whereas it is the foundation of all the existing love in the world. His love for humankind is not limited, but absolute, unqualified and infinite.

Love is evidently present between everyone in the world, thus creates a general understanding that leads to unity.  For instance, when love prevails among people, especially in terms of strong disagreement, they will have this force of control that results to unity among them. Love also creates unity in way that when a man sees the “right” girl, he will do everything just to have her. They will unite as one; which is what true love really means—being one. Love definitely makes the world go round. Moreover, love gives life a meaning because that is something that cannot be replaced no matter how hard we try. Having someone to share your life with gives it meaning. When you give more of yourself than what others give you, you can truly say that you have meaning in your life.

Love therefore is the attachment that results from deeply appreciating another’s goodness. Everything that people do is based on love. Love is the base of all emotions. Love is a major purpose for living; that connection is immanent in all that we do.  The love we get from our friends, partner, family and God is what keeps us hoping and believing in life. People can do some hideous things out of hate and fear, but love has the power to push us to do something better.
